This sounds like a job for Robert Patterson. I'd suggest you contact him personally through his website. Make him aware of Peter Thomsen's workaround, in case he doesn't know of it. The workaround looks to me like it could be automated with a plugin, but I really don't know for sure. As Robert already has developed Patterson Beams and Beam Over Barlines, this might be a good fit.
