best practices for cadenzas, no bar lines
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I want to type up a lengthy cadenza from Piazzolla's Kicho. Comes to about the equivalent of 120 quarter notes. Been a while. What's advice for best practice so that the other parts only show up as one measure, with a single whole rest?
thanks in advance

My version stops at 100/4. But hey, maybe I can put it at 60/2. Will try and report back.

Presumably it won't all fit on one system, so have a measure per system (you can hide the barline). There's a JW plug-in that will help with this--i think you can enter it in 4/4 and then the plug-in will do the right thing.
OK, will try. Yes, the split over system break is a little unweildy.

In fact, to split over the system break in Finale you have to make separate measures.
I didn't read carefully that you want the parts to have one measure rest. If the internal barlines are invisible, maybe you can put a whole rest in the middle one, and blank notation for the others.

It is possible to make split points within one measure. Measure Attributes has a checkbox to Allow Horizontal Split points. Once you've done that, you get three anchors in the Measure Tool. The bottom one lets you set split points.motet wrote:In fact, to split over the system break in Finale you have to make separate measures.
There's also a plug-in that comes with Finale that does this more easily.

1) It is true that {Horizontal Split Points} is an option, but the feature is buggy.
It may not be a good idea to split a 60/2 (or 30/1) measure across several systems, via Horizontal Split Points.
2) The plug-in Split Measure does not use Horizontal Split Points, but rather creates the split by adding an extra measure, and adjusting the time signatures accordingly.
The first measure gets Invisible Barline, and the second measure is not included in the Measure Numbering.
