I have the measure tool selected, double click the measure. It doesn't matter if the measure is at the beginning, end or middle of the system.

Any of the right barline attributes work fine but none of the left ones do anything.

using windows 10, finale 2014.5

The so called “Left Barline” is - in “Finale-speak” - only the vertical line at the very left of a system.
All the other barlines - at the middle of a system or at the end of a system - are “Right Barlines”.

In Other Words:
There is only one “Left Barline” in each system.

By The Way:

Take a look in
Document menu > Document Options > Barlines

What are the settings for Left Barlines?

thanks, so now what I'm seeing is that I can't change the left most barline. I don't see anything unusual in the document options->barlines dialog.
