Can I select a series of articulations and bulk align them vertically so they are all on the same level?

Absolutely. Select them all, then right-click on the one you wish to be the ideal.

that did nothing other than bring up the definition dialog and only positions the single one that was right clicked on.

this is finale 2014.5 by the way...

Sorry--I was thinking of hairpins. You want to align all the articulations in a single staff aligned horizontally, or align all the articulations in a single measure encompassing several staves vertically?

vertically, these are for picking indications in an instructional book i'm writing. In the past I used a plugin but it's no longer available.

Articulations are typically placed according to the notes they're attached to, so the they should be aligned already. If you select them all and press Backspace, that should removed any "manual" adjustments. If I'm misunderstanding you, maybe attach a picture.

JW Change can align ("snap") the articulations (even of a specific type) in a selected region on a guide.

doesn't seem to work for me. The vertical offset one works but the snap-to guide never snaps to anything

If I create the guide after I open the jwchange and then snap to guide, it'll change 1 articulation out of about 4 measures worth (20+) articulations.

See the one "m" which got changed? It left everything else. Am I doing something wrong?

You may need to change the Document Options for Snapping to Guides -- probably increasing the "Gravity Zone".

Wouldn't it be handier to use an expression for this? It'll attach to a specific horizontal position and you can set the vertical position to be anything you please.

Last december, I posted a JWLua solution for an articulation inspector here, I repost it below. Select a region with articulations, run the script and it will display the articulations' numbers with their vertical and horizontal positions. You can edit these positions as you like. This may be of some help when aligning multiple articulations.

I wasn't able to make this plugin work on my system, Harald. And the dialogue box comes up looking like this:

But I may soon have one of the new iMacs (hehe), on which it will probably be fine.

My experience is that the windows of the JW Lua plug-ins often have to be enlarged in their Mac version.

Thanks, michelp. I had tried enlarging the window, but without success. No double-headed arrows appear at the borders. None of my other JW Lua plugin windows have issues of overlapping items, but I can't enlarge them either.

When JW Lua scrips are being developed on Windows, it seems additional work has to be done by the developer to enlarge the window of the Mac version. The end user can't do anything about this, of course.
