I'm not sure why Finale asks me this, since no matter which way I answer, or whether I check the "don't ask me again" box or not, it will keep asking again and again anyway every time I launch Finale (don't they test these things?). I assume by "registered as Irfanview.clp" they mean that .clp is registered to be opened by Irfanview. I don't need Irfanview to open .clp files, and can probably fix this with the OS, but what the heck is a Finale .clp file anyway?

You're right. Apparently you can hold down Ctrl while copying or pasting and have the selection go to or come from a .clp file. I'm not sure why the extension needs to be registered in Windows to do that, but Finale seems to insist whether you use the feature or not.

Presumably it's a conflict between apps for 'ownership' of the file type. The .clp extension is used generally for a "Windows clipboard file", so that is what Irfanview wants it for. I presume that Finale's clp format is different. Maybe Irfanview keeps reclaiming the extension silently?motet wrote: I'm not sure why the extension needs to be registered in Windows to do that, but Finale seems to insist whether you use the feature or not.
Clip Files are a much under-used and under-valued feature of Finale, IMO.motet wrote:Apparently you can hold down Ctrl while copying or pasting and have the selection go to or come from a .clp file.
The existence of a bug does not mean no testing was done.motet wrote: (don't they test these things?).
Maybe they didn't test Finale against IrfanView and all other third-party software.
Maybe the bug is unique to your system and can't be reproduced elsewhere.
Maybe they did notice the bug, find its cause, write it up, and put it on the list of things to be fixed, but towards the end of the list.
But it's certainly worth reporting, so that if the problem does lie with Finale, MM can fix it in one of the regular updates. I agree that duplicating an existing system file extension is asking for trouble, rather than using a unique one. .fclp doesn't seem to be used.

I wasn't running IrfanView in between. I'd fire up Finale, answer the question, quit, and start Finale again and face the same question, no matter what the answer.
I was able to deregister .clp with the NirSoft utility. The reminds me of the .mus file-association problem that many people have reported.

I am glad to learn about the clip feature, though! I will use it. There's really no reason to register the type with Windows, since one isn't going to click on such files from Windows Explorer, but rather only access them from within Finale.
