Extra space after key signature
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hello,
Can anyone help me get rid of the extra space after the key sigs in examples 2, 4, and 5? I've tried note spacing, updating layout, checking for extra space in measure attributes (there isn't any). What else? (See attachments)
Thanks,
JR

All notation software puts that space there — at least the 6 current ones that I own. But everything is adjustable in Finale, right? Here's what I did:
In Encore, there are two choices when it comes to the Align Spacing in the Measures menu. If I select Engraver's Spacing, it behaves like the others. If, however, I select Mathematically Perfect, that space is reduced. This gave me an idea.
I went to the Finale Help site, typed perfect spacing into the search and came up with this:
https://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/Fin ... %20spacing
I believe this is what you are looking for. Scroll down till you find this:

I can't figure out why some measures have that extra space and some don't. However, if you run "Time Signature Spacing", that fixes it. (Utilities Menu > Music Spacing).

I couldn't make that do what the OP wants—at least on my Mac (2014.5 or 25). Is it different in Windows?N Grossingink wrote:I can't figure out why some measures have that extra space and some don't. However, if you run "Time Signature Spacing", that fixes it. (Utilities Menu > Music Spacing).

However Document/Document Options/Key Signature lets you set this spacing globally. This is in the link I posted.

I don't know about Windows, I'm on a Mac, Finale 2014.5. The screenshot shows the result of Time Signature Spacing.MikeHalloran wrote:I couldn't make that do what the OP wants—at least on my Mac (2014.5 or 25). Is it different in Windows?

I don't think you read the question carefully.MikeHalloran wrote:All notation software puts that space there — at least the 6 current ones that I own.

This seems to be a bug related to the 8/1 time signature, believe it or not. I tried 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, ... All is well until you get to 8/1.

Motet,
Thank you for your fine troubleshooting. That seems to be the cause: a bug.
For these kind of workpages, I use a different approach to the time signature. I just choose common time, then choose the Measure Attributes to position notes evenly across the measure. That will avoid the bug. I suppose creating a tuplet with 8 wholes notes in place of one would work as well.

I saw "space evenly" in the measure attributes--I didn't realize that worked on overstuffed measures. N. Grossingink's time-signature spacing seems a good solution as well.
I guess I'll report this, though I'm guessing MM will deem it low priority (justly so, probably).

Does it work correctly if you set the time signature to "32/4 display as 8/1"?

No.
I think it's a numeric overflow problem. 31/4 is OK; 32/4 is not. A quarter note's duration internally in Finale is 1024, so 31/4 is 31,744, while 32/4 is 32,768. The latter is just too big to be stored as a 16-bit signed number; it overflows and looks like a negative number. If this is used in computing something, wrong results ensue. The measure needs to end with a cautionary clef change for the bug to happen.
I'll attach the file if anyone wants to play with it.
