I am constructing a chart wherein on three measures, alternate noteheads must be used. However, I also need to put a regular whole note on the second layer. Unfortunately, when I do this and then return to layer one, the whole note is invisible. :( How can I cause it to show? Thank you!

Are you using View Active Layer Only? Is it deselected, to view all layers?

How did you change the noteheads to your alternate notation?

I was able to do this using JW Change for the alternate noteheads. there may be a problem in playback, however, because the hollow diamonds enter as harmonics, and not on the D line. I had to move them to appear correctly.

Hi, Miker:

I started out by entering the notes and changing the note heads individually with Special Tools. When I couldn't make the whole note visible, I then tried again by switching tactics to making all of the notes on that measure/layer with "x" noteheads, globally. Obviously, it still didn't work.

I know I've seen "View Active Layer Only" but I rarely have to use these tools and I don't recall where to find it or how to get there?

I just noticed you're on Allegro, sorry.

My method won't work for you, since it required a plug-in.

If you're willing to forego playback, you can do it with a text expression. Just use the Text tool>Insert>Symbol... and pick the whole note out of the palette. Then, just put it on the spot where you want it.

I would save that for last, because music spacing or screen updating might move them from where you put them.

PS: Ever thought about upgrading? <grin>

Miker, I'm not on Allegro. I used to be, but now I'm on Finale 2014. I just hadn't updated my profile; however, I just did.

In that case, than I suggest you download JW Change. It's free, but he accepts donations.

Since you're using F14, make sure to download the 32-bit version. Then, you should be fine.

I'm sorry, I don't see how this solves my problem??? I would appreciate specific instructions ... Additionally, the download file to which you referred, i.e., "JW Change," doesn't appear to have anything to do with layers according to the description on the website.

One of the components of JW Change is Noteheads, which gives you the options changing noteheads. Rather than entering the notes as alternate notation, enter them as regular layer one notes, and use the plugin to change them to the x and diamond noteheads. Then, your regular layer two notes should enter with no problem.

If that doesn't work, attach your file and we'll sort it out.

I inow it works, because that's what I did in the attached screenshot, above!

Of course it changes noteheads, but does it explain the missing layer?

OP:

The staff style for Rhythmic Notation doesn't show notes in other layers. You can change the Staff Style to allow other layers to show. if you attach a sample file, we can probably be of better help, as we are only guessing as to what you did to get what the picture shows.

Okay, I downloaded it. How do I get it to work with Finale?

You may not need the plugin if you are using the Staff Style that I mentioned. Can you post a sample file so we can put this to rest?

I downloaded it, installed it, used it and the single whole note (that is supposed to be on measure #46) is still not visible. The file is attached.

Uncheck "Show Active Layer Only".

Zuill, that was mentioned to me. However, I don't know where to find it. I asked, but I didn't receive an answer.

It's in the Document menu about halfway down. It is checked in your file. Click on it and it will uncheck it.

Thank you, Zuill! My hero! I knew it had to be something simple, if only I could get the right answer. :) You're the best!
