Windows 7 Finale 2014.5

So with 25 unavailable to those of us on Windows 7, I'm back to 2014.5. And back to trying to figure out how to do a full orchestral score "in C", with some woodwind lines where instruments change which I would always want in C, but with the octave transpositions retained (piccolo, double bass).

From rereading my earlier post on this, it seems the only options are:

- either use the octave transposition clefs, but with the piccolo how does that work if you're switching instruments?
- come up with bespoke staff styles for the octave transpositions

Am I missing anything? Any better suggestions?

Thanks.

Such staff styles would be trivial.

I guess I am not understanding but you want the flute to do double duty on piccolo on the same staff? You want to concert pitch notes to be displayed in the score for either instrument? That is very easy to do so I must not understand what you want.

I would just set up the score with non-transposing staves and enter the notes as you want them to display. I assume you want the playback to be correct, so enter hidden expressions as needed that have playback transposition properties.

For instance, write the basses as they'll appear on the part and add a hidden "8vb" playback expression. Same for contrabassoon. For piccolo, add "8va" only for piccolo passages, add a cancelling expression when going to flute, and another "8va" when resuming on piccolo.

I've never done it, but the tools are there.

N, that doesn't work with instrument changes. If I switch from clarinet to sax (which I do frequently), the program adds a transposed key signature back in for the new instrument.

I don't understand about the hidden expressions...

Basically I'm looking for a workaround in 2014.5 for the Maintain Octave Transposition option that 25 had/has. Which since I can't use 25, I can't access.

So yes, flute changes to piccolo to flute, on the one line, but when the instrument is piccolo, it's still notated an octave below concert pitch.

"...it's still notated an octave below concert pitch."

I am sorry to be so dense but when you switch to pic from flute can't you just use the transpose up/down octave to put the notes where you desire them.

In clarinet to A sax the Score Manager will let you specify what transposition you want? Or, is it playback you want to sound correct?
