I have finale 2014.5 on windows.

My timpani part is displaying many note stems. Please see attached.

Did I hit the wrong computer keys to cause this?
Is there an easy fix in case this happens again?

As Far As I Can Tell from the attached screen shot, the “many note stems” are hidden notes (= will not print).
My guess is that they are playback notes.
Can you hear the notes in playback?

You can choose, not to see the hidden notes displayed on the computer screen:
View menu > Show > Hidden Notes and Rests (de-select this menu item)

You can also choose to see the hidden notes displayed with a faint shading:
Preferences - View > Hidden Object Shading (choose a low percentage)

I've seen others report this, and it is indeed put there by "human playback." I thought it was supposed to clean up after itself, though.
