Question 1) Which of these two choices would be better (I am referring to the arrow)?
The top one has the advantage of not changing places if the spacing is altered.
The lower one, while to my eye is prettier, has the annoyance of shifting constantly at the slightest respacing of any notes in the score. Also, it will require adjusting in all the parts (this particular notation appears in multiple parts for multiple measures).

Question 2) While I'm here: does Finale have a square fermata? I could have sworn I saw one before but for the life of me can't seem to find it now when I need it.

1) Is this a Smart Shape or Shape Expression? If a Smart Shape, enter the anchor points at different locations to see if that makes a difference. I'd anchor on the left to the thick barline and on the right to the right barline. If a Shape Expression, I'd check "Allow Horizontal Stretching" in the designer box.

Just guesses.

2) There is no square fermata that I know of in the Finale fonts. The guys at Make Music don't use those in their wedding bands. Try Fughetta or Fravura.

the arrows are SmartShapes.
unfortunately, the anchor points are always too far from where I'd LIKE them to be, and when I come to do parts any modifications that make the score look good, look like crap in the parts.

I can not find any square fermatas in neither Fughetta nor Fravura.

But there are square fermatas in the font Toccata, and in the font Fravura-Extra.

Also, it is not hard to design a custom square fermata symbol in Finale’s Shape Designer.

I use the square fermata from Opus Special Extra (which font came with a Sibelius 6 demo some years ago).

It appears both to display and to print to PDF correctly in F 25, unlike the Opus font's Haupstimme sign which no longer functions correctly in Finale.

As Peter said, they are in both fonts, but slightly different in appearance.

Haupstimme from Fravura-Extra seems to work. I couldn't even find it in any of the Opus fonts. Maybe it's been removed?

1) The ending repeat sign is a shape expression, right?
Add a horizontal line (same thickness as the arrow) to the shape, starting from the repeat sign and extending to the right.
Then you can position your smart shape arrow as in the top picture, but because the added horizontal line overlaps the smart shape arrow, it will look like the bottom picture (if positioned well). Make the overlap long enough so that the shape expression and the smart shape meet each other regardless of spacing changes or spacing differences between score and parts.

2) For square fermata, I've always used a self-created shape expression. (I would've sent you one right here but I'm not at my home computer now...)

Thank-you Ere, that is an excellent suggestion.
