A maintenance update has been released, with (as far as I can tell) no announcement, other than a passing comment on the other forum. Nor can I find and information about what it contains other than addressing an issue with Assign to Staves.

It's mostly to fix the bug in 25.4.0 that was complained of, where files wouldn't open.

Great!

As long as it doesn't break anything else...

It should go without saying but I'm going to say it anyway. Maintenance updates (24.4.1) will not install properly unless the current version is named Finale without modification.

This is different than version updates (25.3, 25.4 etc.) where renaming the older version will keep it from being overwritten allowing both to function.

At least, this is true on a Mac. I tested it just now to see.

If you really want to test 25.4 vs 25.4.1, you would rename Finale to something like Finale 25.4, then log into your MM User account and download the complete installer for 25.4.1 and run it. I saw no reason to do that here.

It's odd that they didn't announce this. What's especially odd is that there isn't a mention of it in the KB article about the very issue that I suppose the release fixed. Maybe it didn't fix the file reading error, and this update is about something else.

Keeping it a secret seems quite strange.

P.S.: Also, no release notes or readme file available. I usually like to read these before installing. All they show are the notes for 25.4.0. Curiouser and curiouser!!!

I went ahead and installed 24.5.1.123456788 or whatever on two computers. You guys can put off a few days if you wish. I'll report any adverse reactions. I don't know what's been fixed or even how to check.

It appeared to be specific to a couple of issues mentioned on the other forum.

Was the odd character in file names issue corrected, I wonder? It appeared to affect Win 7 users only (or was it just one?)

Finale 25.3 works fine for me. With the questions surrounding 25.4 and 25.4.1, I'm going to sit tight and wait before making a decision on 25.5. Lack of advance notice and documentation on this 25.4.1 makes me feel like I'm being given the runaround.

Do what you like but, if you have to export MusicXML, big improvements were made. I'm not talking about the .musicxml extension. Even .xml export behaves much better when imported into other apps.

my thoughts as well.

Maybe N Grossingink might consider changing that "off" to "around"?

I've already posted how to have 25.3 and 25.4, now 25.4.1 working side by side so that you can compare the two. It's not rocket surgery.

If you want to hold off on the update and pat yourself on the back for doing so, knock yourself out. It certainly isn't necessary. Bragging about how smart you are for not trying it? Whatever...

I'll probably delete 25.3 from my system to save a bit of drive space today.

It's been proven countless times over the years that proceeding with caution with a Finale update is a good idea. Update or not as you will, but ridiculing someone for exercising such caution is uncalled-for.

25.4.1 clearly states, ...

"Opening Files with Special Characters.
Finale successfully opens files when special characters are used in linked graphics, audio files, and percussion MIDI map file names."

... on the opening screen. It is the single item expressed.

Okay. I see it now. I thought it was the only fix, so I was not seeing it. It was buried down the list.
