Indeed. Almost all articulations have metatools already, so it's just a matter of memorizing the few that you need. Many are mnemonic--S for staccato, A for accent, etc. If you forget, type Shift+any letter and look. You can cancel to avoid reprogramming that letter. Once you learn them, it's easier and faster than picking something from a menu. The dark-box method actually involves yet another click to get to the menu.

Even easier: if you know you want to apply tremolo and accent, say, to as-yet unaccented notes, draw the rectangle and pick tremolo from the menu, and at that time make a mental note of the accent's metatool (shown in the upper-right corner). Then after getting the tremolos, immediately apply the accents using the noted metatool. That way there's nothing to memorize.
