Is it just me or do there seem to me more collisions of rests between layers in Finale 25 than in previous version? I seem to be spending ages manually adjusting them. I know about the document options where I can adjust the height of floating rests on a global basis but this tends to create as many problems as it solves. Does anybody know of a means of removing collisions globally?

Thanks

Tony

You could use JW Change, it will save you some time. You can find it on finaletips.nu, it's free.
Have a look at the setting for rests in the plug-in.

There have been no changes to the way that Finale handles rests in layers, except for the improvement of combining two floating rests of the same type in different layers. Otherwise it will just put them at the level set for that layer, regardless of collisions.

Right - it's probably just the style of music I'm working on at the moment. I realise and appreciate that MM don't want to be prescriptive and feel that most decisions as to spacing and positioning should be left to the user but I can't be alone in thinking that the one place one would never ever want a rest to appear is slap bang in the middle of a note...

Correct. But there are different options as to where the displaced rest should be. So, Finale gives us complete control to adjust it for ourselves. If Finale did it automatically, there would probably be many places where that automated displacement would be unsatisfactory. So, best to be given the power to have the choice and adjust it as needed.

I think it would be better to resolve the collision automatically but let you override it if you wanted.

Yes that would be great.
