Greetings again!
Another difficulty. I’m in 9/8 and want Finale to automatically display the correct rests after entering say a single quaver. At the moment it gives me quaver / 2 quaver rests / dotted mimin rest. I’ve been living with this for some time and correcting it manually, but now I see that after the correction, (to quaver / 2 quaver rests / 2 dotted crotchet rests), Finale still pastes the wrong notation after copy/paste!

Try going to quantization settings, and check "allow dotted rests on compound meters" (or whatever it says.)
I know this isn't your situation, but that setting seems to cure a lot of similar problems.

Thanks for this, Mike, but I can’t get it to work. I cannot find quantization settings, to allow me to check "allow dotted rests on compound meters". I’ve seen the dialog box I’m looking for in the Help pages - I need the More Quantization Settings dialog box.
‘How to get there’ tells me to ‘Choose Quantization Settings from the MIDI menu’, but all I can find so far is the Midi Tool under Advanced Tools which gives me Audio set up. Not what I’m looking for. Where is the MIDI menu?
As you may have gathered, I don’t do anything with MIDI when running Finale!

Good grief – I can’t see for looking as the saying goes! Sorry to be so slow.
Right, I’ve now opened the right menu and see that "allow dotted rests on compound meters".was already ticked, so I guess I’ll need another suggestion to solve my 9/8 difficulty.

Right--the dotted minim is a dotted rest. I agree with you that it's wrong. I think you just need to get used to entering the rests manually instead of relying on "fill with rests" in that situation.
But if I correct it to two dotted crochets, that survives copy and paste, both whole measure and just the dotted crochets.

Yes, I did go through all these different possibilities you mention before posting my question. I just thought there should be a setting to cover this. Perhaps there isn't!
Guess I'll have to keep entering manually in 9/8 instead of relying on the useful 'fill bar with rests'.

If I allow Finale to automatically enter the final dotted crotchet rest and then make a copy/paste, the two dotted crotchet rests are changed to a dotted minim on pasting. However, if I enter both dotted crotchet rests manually, then copy/paste does work.

I don't get that result. If I enter the first dotted quarter and let Finale add the second via "fill with rests," and then copy it, it copies correctly, both Speedy and Simple entry. How are you entering things?
