Dear all,
I have a MIDI file and I would like to create time signatures based on Notes in this file in Finale.
The MIDI file has no time signature information unfortunately.
The MIDI file has a C3 for the beginning of each bar and then additional C4 notes - depending on the type of time signature.
For example if the MIDI file has a 4/4 and then a 3/4 and then a 5/8 the MIDI file would read:
1/4 C3 1/4 C4 1/4 C4 1/4 C4 1/4 C3 1/4 C4 1/4 C4 1/8 C3 1/8 C4 1/8 C4 1/8 C4 1/8 C4
I hope this is halfway understandable?
Alternatively I could also have a text file with the time signatures written in it - in any kind of format - if that would help too?
This could be a simple txt file with a following format for example:
4/4
3/4
5/8
Perhaps to go through MusicXML could be an option?
Thank you for your help,
all the best
Frank

Just curious-
What software are you using to create the MIDI file? Is it not possible to set the time signatures using that software?

I export from Ableton Live, which does not include time signature MIDI export unfortunately

When you open the MIDI file in Finale, what do you get? Is it even possible to open it?
If you post the MIDI file here, or a Finale file of the opened MIDI, someone might suggest a solution. Make a ZIP archive of the MIDI.

I don't think there is a way to open it automatically the way you want. If the source didn't create the meter for you, then you're going to have top do it manually.
Jari's JW Meter and Rhythm plugin can do it for this file. Use Measure Groups/Set time Signature. Enter this string (for this file):
4/4 3/4 5/4*4 4/4 5/4 3/4 4/4*3 6/4 5/4*2 3/4*3 5/4
Notice the technique used for more than one meter in succession.
After applying, then do a Rebar and you are going to be pretty close.
