When creating a tie across a system break, Finale chooses a tie direction automatically and creates a small tie on the first measure of the new system to indicate a tied note. If you change the direction of your tie from the previous system, the small indicator tie on the following system will not change direction. Neither can you click on the small tie to change its direction manually. Does anyone know how to change the direction of the small courtesy ties that occur over system breaks?

Much thanks for any help!

I have already submitted this to Tech Support. Please do the same!

I do it all the time with
Special Tools Tool > Tie Tool

Select the tie handle, and use the command
Special Tools menu > Tie Direction > Flip

Note that the Tie Direction sub-menu displays a keyboard shortcut.
You might like to memorize the shortcut if you flip many ties.

I thought for sure if you switched to Scroll View and flipped the tie there the stub would be right, but it's not. So Peter's solution is the way to go. Love those special tools.

@Peter Thomsen
Special Tools Tool > Tie Tool

Select the tie handle, and use the command
Special Tools menu > Tie Direction > Flip
I have done what you said but I can't select handle.

Please answer me what to do to change tie direction.

That's a slur, not a tie. Those are 2 entirely different things.

Inside Out,

I think that the Original Poster (= WilliamRAyers) asked about flipping a tie, but you can indeed flip a slur, too.

A slur is a Smart Shape, hence switch to the Smart Shape Tool.
Handles will appear on all slurs.

Select the slur handle, and use the command
Smart Shape menu > Direction > Flip

Note that the Direction sub-menu displays a keyboard shortcut.
You might like to memorize the shortcut if you flip many slurs.

Thank you, Peter! Worked like a charm! I have always known the shortcut to highlight the preceding note and flip the tie but never bothered to actually go into the tie tool menu when I couldn't flip courtesy ties (since they have no preceding note). It came up a couple time in the past few months, so I figured it was time to ask.

Mike, I will definitely submit this to tech support. It seems like an obvious correction to also flip the courtesy tie after a system break.

On a secondary note, thank you both for being so responsive on this forum. It has been a great help to me over the past decade.

My best,

Will
