Crowded layout

The attached is the last page of Violin II of the Overture from Bach's Orchestral Suite II. In the seventh line, the beginning of the line is too widely spaced while the last three bars are too crowded - particularly the last, bar 205.I've tried re-spacing that line with note, beat, time, and music spacing and nothing makes it better. Some make it much worse. How can I make bars 198 through 202 take up less horizontal space, giving bars 203 - 205 the extra width they need?

Two ideas:

1) The overall scaling is at 85 %.
Try a lower percentage.

2) Try these settings for the Music Spacing:

Interesting suggestions, Peter. Thank you.

In the United States we use a decimal point (period) instead of a comma as a separator so the Scaling factor is 1.414 and the reference width is .36. I also found that a duration setting of 512 improves matters even more. Since I didn't realize that these settings existed, your suggestion is particularly useful. Thanks, again.

Oops, Sorry!

I have selected Points as Measurement Units.
In the screen shot the Reference Width is 36pt = 36 Points.

Another idea:

Change the spacing options to: Reference Width .25 inch, Ratio 1.4. This has the benefit of slightly increasing the spacing of eighth notes while narrowing slightly the spacing of quarters and halves. It also fixes the crowding you noted but you might want to use the Special Tools > Note Position Tool to slightly touch up the spacing in m205. See the attached file.

I like and use the JW Note Spacing plug-in a lot. In your example, I would select mm 198-202, and run "Tight Spacing" from the plug-in.
