Hi there, I'm using Finale 2011 on a Mac

I'm wondering how to add the F-clef in the place shown in the picture? Any idea?? :)

Many thanks for your tipps!

Diego.

Welcome to the forum!

I would use the Expression Tool to add the F clef symbol.
Create a new expression category for “off-staff” clefs, by duplicating and editing an existing category, e. g. the Dynamics category.

Many thanks Peter

I've created the "off-staff-clefs" expresion category but now I don't know how to include a F-clef as expression mark. Do you know how can I do it?

Thanks in advance! :)

"I'm wondering how to add the F-clef in the place shown in the picture?"

Isn't that still middle C ?

E in Bass Staff. Finale will play back Middle C, but a person reading the score will play low E. If correct playback is needed, mute the written note and put the real note in another, hidden layer.

Oh, OK, in a case like this, which I have never seen BTW, you read the note as if it were the whole staff. Not just the note itself?

Low note E in Bass staff, upper chord in Treble.

To get correct playback in Finale, put the written note in Layer 2 and mute it, then put the playback note in Layer 3 and hide it.

Set the font to Maestro, 24 point, and type a question mark in the text box to get the F clef. You can just put it in the Miscellaneous category if you want.

Because this is not the normal clef, I think the size should be smaller, as with clef changes. I used Maestro 18, which is equivalent to resizing Maestro 24 at 75%.

it's a low E.
relatively standard in piano writing.
you will come across this quite often in the music of Debussy for example.

"...standard in piano writing."

I am not a piano player but why not just write it in the left hand? Where it belongs !?

There are plenty of situations in which the music is layered in such a way that one would otherwise require three (or even four) staves to notate the music clearly. In lengthier passages, many composers would choose to use more than two staves. If it's just a matter of an occasional note, the above is an excellent solution and one which shouldn't cause any problems with an experienced pianist.

There is no left hand stave pictured. It could be a piano "lead sheet". In fact, it may not be for piano at all. Maybe a lead sheet for horns with chord voicings indicated.

Here are some mixed-clef examples from an edition of Debussy's Preludes (scroll down to the bottom of each).
