Hello,
I cannot seem to get this right. In measure 19, For the Men's Chorus I need a simple B half note. Songs in 2/4---- in the same measure I need a quarter rest and then a triplet with X noteheads for one person who shouts a line. I have tried to layer and then use the staff tool but it in layer 2 it also changes layer one to x noteheads and I don't know why. HELP!
Thank you
Michael

Choose "Show Active Layer Only" and try it. Then, when you go back to viewing both layers, you should get what you want.

I entered the notes in layers one and two. Then, I just selected the second half of the measure, and used Utilities > Change > Noteheads. Layer one was untouched.

You can also use JW Change and filter the plugin's action to affect only layer 2.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I found what I was doing wrong.
First Miker I do need help with your suggestion: HOW DO I JUST SELECT THE SECOND HALF OF A MEASURE. When I use the selection tool and move to that portion that I need it moves everything to a mass paste bleeding to the next measure. So I obviously have the technique wrong.
The reason I was not being successful is because I was using the staff tool. This did not work. What I did now was 1. Go into measure tool. Highlighted the measure to change. 2. Went into document to show active layer only. then 3. went to utilities to change the notehead. Finally 4. went back to clear the layers and everything was great.
When I learn to highlight a portion of a measure it will need less steps.
Thanks again to everyone.

With the mouse, click and drag a rectangle that includes the portion of the measure you want, but begin your rectangle outside of the staff.
I tried this with no success. What tool am I using to do this? I don't know WHY I can't get this. If someone can explain thoroughly step by step how to select just a portion of a measure I would appreciate it. It sounds so easy but I have failed miserably.
Thank you
Michael

Press, and drag diagonally from a position outside the staff.

The sometimes snag with that method can be that in a crowded score one is bit liable to select other things instead of a part bar, such as slurs, hairpins &c, which can become a bit frustrating. Another way to select a part bar using the selection tool is first to select the whole bar, then to use shift plus a right or left arrow key to extend the selection, and then to click shift plus the opposite direction arrow until the selection is reduced to a part bar at the required end. This doesn't work so well if you want to select just the middle part of a bar rather than at either end (and is only relevant if one does keep selecting unintended items by mistake when applying the usual method as described by MikeR).

Another snag (although I didn't want to get into too much minutiae) is that you can select too much or too little of a beat. This is only relevant when you plan on copying and pasting a section. You have to learn how to start and stop the selection to cover what you want. Otherwise, you might think you are selecting a half note, but when you paste it, it's only a dotted quarter.
This all comes with experience and practice. First, you have to learn the general concept!

Thank you all very much. I successfully highlighted a portion of a measure. Their is a technique to it. AND the shift arrow key will also come in handy. So another thing of the thousands of things to learn on finale crossed out.
Thanks again
