The Error 2 problem
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hello,
through the last years this was discussed
https://forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?f=5&m=476153
Was there ever a fix to this? Does it still happen in Finale 25?
I have an open file right now that is exhibiting the problem (2014.5). I have been trying lots of things to be able to save the file, but sofar no luck. What are your best tips? I managed to print to pdf, but I would rather keep the files of course. Save or save as won't work.
I would rather not resort to exporting to xml...

If you've created a separate folder for the .tmp files (not .bak or .asv files), then point to that for temp files in preferences, you should have no problem. When Finale is closed, delete these files. I do it about once a week to keep things from happening in this area.
To be honest, I don't think I've ever had the problem. Probably because I started doing this long, long ago. I have a separate folder for each version of Finale on my machine, as I don't want one version trying to access .tmp files from another. I clean them all out regularly.
I feel the pain of losing a large file, but it doesn't have to happen.

Thank you Zuill,
I think I actually did that on your recommendation many years ago, but I have apparently forgot to do so when upgrading. I will do it again.
No idea about how to proceed to save the file that I have open right now?

I can't help you with that. The closest thing you have is XML. I would also print a pdf so that you can use that to check against the XML for any needed fixes.
The unique folder technique is for future work. Unfortunately, you can't set the folder up properly while Finale is open, since it will crash, most likely.
Have you tried opening a new file and copying into that? I'm not sure that will work, but maybe.

Yes, I just opened the latest .bakx file, and that one saves under another file name without problems. Now I have to be off, but I will try copying into that file later.

When Finale won't let me save the document because of some error, I can save a Clip File of the whole thing. That can then be pasted into an older version, so you keep your formatting, and get your latest changes.Harpsi wrote:No idea about how to proceed to save the file that I have open right now?

I don't have any problems. Never had. But I've had a designated temp folder for years. I think it is partly an OS issue.

Thanks for your input.
I printed pdfs and saved at least one clip file. Unfortunately I was stupid enough to try to insert the clip file instead of just pasting it in some vain attempt to see if the layout would transfer. Total failure. Had to force quit.
Anyway, now I am up and going again with a new fresh temp folder.
