I am using Finale 2014.5.6359 through Windows 10 and Garritan Big Band.

I'm writing a batch of big band charts where the reeds all double. How do I get, say, the lead alto sax to play clarinet in the playback. I've been trying to effect this change using the 'dump' utility in the expression tool, but I can't make the sounds change.

I'd love to know how to do this once and for all.

Thanks to all!

I use the Change Instrument utility. That not only changes the instrument, but the transposition as well. And the correct instrument plays back on entry, unlike using the staff style approach.

Thank you for your reply. So, when I 'apply a staff style' to, say, my alto part to have him play clarinet it not only transposes it correctly, but changes the playback sound to clarinet?

And, how does this apply to changing mutes in the brass?

Thanks, again!

I don't use Staff Styles any more. I use the Change Instrument feature. It works much better for most situations. I only use the Staff Styles for instruments not in the standard set.

I use staff styles for changing between Bb and A clarinet, but I use MIDI playback so there's no change of sound. It's somewhat easier to see where the changes are with staff styles, but in general I agree with Zuill.

Thanks for the tips. I just tried to make the change using the 'change instrument' function, but is what I see in the pop-up window my Garritan voices, or are they MIDI voices? I use Garritan voices exclusively.

Also, how do I make mute changes? The Finale online user manual has very convoluted explanations, and many of the things described in the explanation don't appear. Are mute changes accessed in a similar way to voice changes?

Again, thank you so much for your time and expertise.
