Hello,
I'm trying to write up some rhythms to teach students about counting. Does anyone have suggestions about how to write in the counts below the notes: 1 + 2 +, or 1 + a, 2 + a, etc. I tried the lyrics tool, but it seems not to be the best way.
Thanks.

If every note and only every note it to get a count, the lyrics tool seems like a good way to go. How did you find it wanting?

I agree with Motet. Could you post a picture - even hand drawn - of what is giving you problems?

If you do need to have counts between notes, put 8th rests in Layer 4, add the counts with the Lyrics Tool (while in Layer 4), then apply the Staff Style for Blank Notation Layer 4.

Ya, I guess the problem is when there is no note on the second beat of the measure:

Zuill, that's a good idea. Let me try that.

For your example, I put half rests in Layer 4.

is there an easy way to enter the rests through the whole piece? i just pressed g over and over and then went back and pressed r on all the notes.

and how do you hide the rests? i selected the staff tool and then ctrl+click-> staff styles, and then chose 'available styles 04 blank notation: layer 4". but i still see them. and the rests in layer 1 are getting affected.

Not sure what is going on. Maybe post a small sample of what you've done and we can troubleshoot for you.

I fixed it. I needed to rightclick and 'Apply Staff Style To:' using the staff tool.

So basically, you all answered my question. Thank you.

I still would like to know if there is an easier way to put all 8th rests for the whole layer.

Enter them in the first measure, copy, and Edit > Paste Multiple.

When doing the paste, make sure you have selected the option to show just that Layer. If you don't do that, it will copy the Layer 1 notes as well, and you may not want that. Choose Show Active Layer, and then be in that Layer (Layer 4, in this case).
