I'm working on classical guitar scores which require multiple voices with different stem directions. I need my upper voices to have up-stems and lower voices to have down-stems, but whenever I add a 2nd voice with 'layer 2' the stems automatically revert to down-stems for my upper voice and up-stems for my lower voice, so they all meet in the middle of the staff.
Is there q way to prevent this from happening? ...ie... can I set a defaut so that whenever I use 2 layers, 1 automatically goes up and 2 automatically goes down?
...also,..is this possibly a problem with Mac in general?...I previously used Finale on a pc and I do not recall having this issue.
Thanks in advance for any help...

The options for stem direction and layers is set in Document Options. You can customize them to your preferences. I would turn them off if you don't need those options.

Thanks for the quick reply!
...so are you saying that if I deselect 'display reverse setting' finale will reverse my stems properly?

....apparently that's not the solution...I just unchecked the 'display reverse settings' box and it makes no difference, my stems still collide in the middle of the measure.
I'm currently reversing the stems in each voice after finishing each phrase,..but that's tedious. must be a better way.

...and a weird thing with reversing the stems using 'l', layer 2 reverses with 1 'l' click, but layer 1 requires 2 clicks...

I'm not sure what you are talking about. Look in Document Options/Layers. Each Layer has its own settings. Is that where you are looking? I think you were looking on the Stems page. That's not what I meant.

Are you using layer 2 for the upper voice and layer 1 for the lower voice? That would explain stems pointing in the wrong direction. You can fix that in Edit->Move/Copy Layers. Or reverse them in the stem settings.
