consolidating or breaking rests
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
How do I consolidate or break rests once they are entered (or once Finale has decided it knows better than me how to notate rest durations)?
For example I entered a half note rest followed by two quarter note rests before an eighth pick-up in a 9/8 measure conceived as 2+1+1+1/2 beats. Finale decided eight eighth-note rests would be more appropriate. How do I consolidate them into the rests I want, and how do I tell Finale to leave my notation alone in the future?
And the same question for breaking a rest into parts, separately notated.
Thanks!

Set up your time signature as 3 dotted quarters, rather than 9 eighth notes. I think that the rebeam command will fix the old ones, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Play with it.

Usually, if you go back and change anything that Finale has decided that it should be some other way, it usually stays. Until, of course, you copy and paste it.

Hi there! Can anyone tell me how to keep this vexing notation problem from happening? Thank you for any advice on this. This is in 12/8, btw.

You have the Time Signature set to "12 - eighth notes". Set it to "4 - dotted quarter notes" and you'll be all set.

If you control-click the measure or area you will get a pop-down menu. If you select 12/8 it will set it up correctly.
