Sound Muffled

Hello,
I'm running finale 2012 on windows 7. The sound of the playback has become very muffled as if it's coming from under a carpet when I'm using my computer's DirectSound. The only way around this is to use my external hard drive and use ASIO, but I don't want to have to use this every time I want to listen to something. Has anyone heard of this problem?
