Hi Forum,

My 8ths aren't swinging.

Here's what I found and tried on the internet:

Expression Designer: set Playback to Swing.
Turn of Human Playback.

Can somebody point me into the right direction?

Mac, Finale 25.

Thanks,
A. P.

Use an expression in the Tempo Marks category to mark "Swing." You can leave Human Playback on.

If that doesn't help (although it should) please post the document, so that we can have a look.

There is an issue with Finale where the expression only applies to the top staff. One needs to modify the Score List to have every staff marked in the parts column for the expression to work properly in the score. This is a known issue, and remains as it has been, even in the most recent version, it seems.

Wow, you're right--I used the "Swing!" tempo mark built into Finale and it didn't work until I did that. Terrible.

Looks like if you set HP to Jazz it circumvents that bug.

They must figure you would only use swing in Jazz.

I know I have sent that one in, before.

Using Jazz in HP Style is great for a whole document, but for documents that vacillate between swing and straight, the expression is the only way to do it. Thus the workaround. This is a longstanding condition, and MM knows of it.

That's it! That's what I call introducing the younger generation to Finale-tradition.

Glad I asked, thank you.

Best,
