Is it possible to extend instrument ranges?

I'm coming up against a problem I didn't expect with Finale. Some of the music I'm working with calls for notes just out of the range playable in Finale.
Is it possible to extened upward the range of any instruments? At the moment I'm thinking about oboe but I've come across the same issue with trombone. I need to be able to use notes just outside what is possible in Finale by as much as a 3rd.

If you are using the Garritan instruments, they are only in the range that is technically possible for the instrument. If you are using the General MIDI, then you have an amazing player with a 128 note range.
Depending on the version that you are using...
If your Garritan instruments are using Kontakt 2 player, there is an option to change the tuning in the player itself.
If your Garritan instruments are using the Aria player, then I do not believe that there is an option to change the tuning.

Change the tuning? You mean, have the instruments play a different pitch? It would be best if they played concert pitch.
I'm using Kontakt2 at this time.
The problem note in the oboe is a high "g" in a piece written between 1772 and 1846.

My point is that you can change the pitch in the Kontakt 2 Player.
What you could try is to create a 2nd Oboe staff. Put a 2nd Oboe instrument into Kontakt, but raise the pitch an octave.
Write the part above the usual range in the 2nd staff. You would need to write it down the octave. You may need to play with the note at which you switch from one staff to the other, in case it gives you an un-natural sound going over the "register change", the way that a clarinet changes tone when changing registers.

Hi Michael. I found this on the Garritan site. It refers to expanding the range of instruments used in the Aria player.
Can I stretch samples to improve instrument ranges ?
All ARIA-powered libraries has been re-programmed specifically to use in the new Aria player. They can't be loaded in Kontakt.
You can edit the .sfz files to change the ranges. All you need to do this is a text editor such as Notepad (Windows).
The ARIA SFZ file parser supports standard 7bit ASCII text files or UTF-8. All ARIA-powered Libraries files are of the former style.

The last response was in 2010. It's now 2016. I'm writing a bass concerto and the Garritan
bass range that came with Finale 2014.5 goes to D6. Far lower than a typical bass concerto
range. I need more range! Like an octave and a half.
Is is possible to do today what wasn't in 2010?
If you know the answer please give step by step instructions. I'm using Windows 10.
Thanx,
Don

What is the SFZ editor? I've tried searching for it but haven't found anything helpful.rjunchaya wrote:The present address of the document dealing with the answer to this question is: https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... an-library

Fin 25 has extra notes for A Cl and BS Cl that weren't available before, except( I guess ) in the complete Garrison P.O., or Big-Band.
Maybe what you need is in F25.
I wasn't able to extend ranges with that Text File.

Well I have just successfully extended the range of the GIFF contrabass clarinet down by a whole tone in F 25 by editing the .sfz file, but it was a far from intuitive exercise and I doubt my ability to describe what I did with sufficient clarity to risk posting instructions here.oldmkvi wrote:… …I wasn't able to extend ranges with that Text File.
However, it IS definitely possible.

To which I'll add that once one has found the .sfz files, has worked out how to duplicate, edit & replace them securely, and has fathomed the arithmetic of hikey & lokey numbers, increasing the range is easy enough. Indeed I'm minded to raise the top range of all the GIFF stringed instruments (I hope without making a boorach of the whole exercise). The alternative is to use SoftSynth.

Once you understand how they work, it's easy. Any text editor will work.Deacon Don wrote: What is the SFZ editor? I've tried searching for it but haven't found anything helpful.

Many samplers load the raw files as well although that isn't as germane to Finale. For manipulating them, I use Mach5 from MOTU which includes IRCAM TS.
