HP 5200 Printer?

Postby John Ruggero » Fri Apr 21, 2017 8:55 pm

Several years ago, some Finale users recommended the HP 5200 (also 5000 and 5100) laser printer as excellent for music. Is this printer still being used and compatible with present versions of the Mac OS and Finale? I can't find a current comparable model and considering getting a refurbished 5200. I need at least 11 x 17, duplex and card stock printing, and it must be a laser printer.

I have a 5000 and it still works. They were very well made and a rebuilt 5200 should be fine. If you're doing any kind of volume I would steer clear of consumer model printers. The duplexer on my 5000 broke some time ago and I couldn't get a replacement part, but I make do manually duplexing.

It still works under Windows (I think Finale is irrelevant). I would look on the HP site to see if there's a driver for whatever Mac OS you have, though. I think there are other Mac users here with that line of HP printer, so hopefully they'll chime in.

Thanks, Motet and michelp. I did notice duplexers for the 5000 series on sale. Can they do 11 x 17 duplex printing?

Please tell me where you saw the duplexers for sale.

The 5000 can duplex 11 x 17 but not 12 x 18--you can manually duplex the latter. I don't know about the 5200.

None of the 5000 Series printers (5000, 5100, 5200) have Bonjour, so they won't be plug and play. They work fine when set up via IP instead of Bonjour, though.

Bonjour is not necessary if there's a direct connection but most do set up laser printers on networks. I don't know the 5200 except that HP says it connects via USB or network. Most HP laser jets have a built-in print server so connecting via IP is easy. If not, compatible Ethernet/USB print servers can be found from $25 up — if sending a large job to the printer affects your Mac (or PC), the $$ spent on a server will be well worth it.

These print drivers are not listed as being part of the OS after Mavericks and there's no getting them separately from HP. This only means that they might not be available in a clean install, not that they can't be found or won't work. If you updated your OS from Mavericks or earlier, the drivers will be there (I deal with customers' incompatible Canon printers — copying the right ones in is no big deal). The Apple and HP lists on this are notoriously never current and it's very possible that the current drivers are there.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04835529

Normally, if the drivers are not pre-installed, the OS will make a query and, if current drivers are available, they will be downloaded. This also happens if Bonjour is supported. If this doesn't happen on a network install over IP, the first thing to try is a usb connection—once the drivers have been downloaded, you can go back to IP. Again, if that doesn't work, this nut is easily cracked. BTW, the 5200 is the only one of the 5000 series that supports USB.

The 5000 series has a networking option called JetDirect which is an EIO print server. I recommend getting that option. Being old, my model doesn't do DHCP, but you can key in the IP address of your choice on the front panel. I have hooked it up at various times to both a router (wired) and directly to the PC, the latter via both an Ethernet hub and a crossover cable. Some technical chops are helpful in doing this.

They typically put an N after the model if it has JetDirect, so a 5000n has JetDirect, a 5000dn has a duplexer and JetDirect, etc.

Mine is pre-USB, so can't comment on that.

I spent yesterday manually duplexing a whole bunch of music and I definitely recommend getting a duplexer if you can. After printing on one side, the paper curls (to a lesser or greater extent depending on the quality of paper) which can cause jamming when you send it back through to print the other side via a paper tray. The duplexer isn't bothered by the curling (which is largely cancelled out by printing on the other side).

I have a 5200, and it works brilliantly. These models DO use Bonjour (mDNS) to advertise their presence on a network, so you don't need to muck about with IP addresses (though you still can if you want). In other words, plug, and play.

The drivers for 5200, 5100 and 5000s are all included in Apple's HP print driver package, which should download when you Add the printer in System Prefs. Although Apple updates the whole package often, the drivers for these models rarely change. (There's not much needs changing - they interpret PS and PDF natively.)

The 5200 is a substantial redesign over the 5100 and 5000s. The cartridges for the older models seemed to be increasingly rarer and more expensive. The 5200 duplexer is much better: I almost never have any jams, which were frequent on the other two. The register between sides is excellent (and can be adjusted). NB: You can't put a 5000 duplexer in a 5200.

It's always good to check the HP site for firmware updates, and you can add RAM modules, jumbo SD cards, hard drives and network cards -- eBay is your friend. If you've got the network card in, you can connect it to an Apple Airport Express to make it stand alone on your WiFi network!

I get around 7,000 A3 sides for each toner cartridge, and the fuser needs replacing around every 100,000 pages.

As it happens, I do have a spare 5200 DTN, if anyone's passing South London. Low mileage, one careful lady owner....

I figured they should when I saw the USB connection but, without confirmation on the Apple or HP sites, I didn't want to speculate.

Thank you everyone for the very valuable additional information concerning the 5200, which is what I will probably get plus the duplexer.
A final question: does it need special venting?

It has a small fan that blows air out on the right hand side (at the top and back of the main block, though the paper trays stick further out the back). I dare say you could put that side close to a wall with no problems.

For a warm, electrostatic device, it also copes remarkably well with cat hair.

Thanks Buontempi. I asked because some of the later professional models need venting to the outside, and we are concerned about environmental hazards. Animal hair won't be an issue. :)

I just purchased a used 5200 to print with my Mac - it was plug-and-play, but the default driver was "Generic PostScript Printer." Was I correct to use this, or should I have opted for the HP 4L/5L drivers running Sierra? I'm not 100% sure that was the exact designation, but I remember it as being similar. Thanks!

Woth most HP printers, you add the printer in System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. The OS will download the right drivers and install them. You also have other choices such as the generic ones or the CUSP.

It's possible that these drivers are no longer available through the Mac OS. If the printer is old enough, it will not be able to tell the Mac what it is so that the OS will download the best driver set. HP support is unlikely to have a clue and Apple will tell you to talk to HP (been there with both companies).

In that case, best to ask around (as you are doing) and hope that someone knows the right answer.

My new Brother printer (and many Canons) does not have the right drivers available through the automated process like HP, Epson and newer Canon. In those cases, the companies generally make the correct drivers available for download.

This should be easily answered on HP's website, but I suspect the generic driver is what you want. The 4L and 5L are different printers.

Funny - I deleted the printer from my System Preferences and tried to add it again. This time, the correct software downloaded, and I'm all set. I wonder what i did wrong the first time - no software downloaded then. Oh well - thanks for the input.

You'd think that, right? With very few, very old exceptions, Mac drivers are not downloadable directly from HP.

During the "scanner hell" period of OS 10.7 – 10.8.1, I worked closely with both companies to get certain issues resolved. There was at least one build where scanning didn't work at all. Although minor updates have occurred ever since, the basic issues were resolved in 10.8.2 and it's been pretty smooth sailing ever since with HP (Canon has their own issues).

Yes, sometimes you have to do that. Kind of like hitting a reset button in the OS. Glad to see you've got it working.

There are firmware updates for the 5200 dated 3/27/2017.

Hey Mike - do you know how to upload the updated firmware to an HP 5200 via USB? Apparently this printer is not a network printer, so USB is my only avenue.

Here are the things I've done and the problems I've encountered:

1) Read HP ReadMe file - it gives instructions for updating firmware using USB for PC but not for Mac.
2) Downloaded HP Utility - it is supposed to have a button for "Update Firmware," but it does not - I can only find "Upload File." This, however, will apparently not allow me to upload an .rfu file, as the file appears gray in my list of files.

A Google search comes up frustratingly dry in this regard - I hope you have some insight. Thanks!

Figured it out - I was able to use HP Utility on my MacBook running Snow Leopard to upgrade the firmware. HP Utility worked perfectly with that system, but it was VERY squirrelly in Sierra.

Glad you found a use for HP Utility. I removed it from my system due to problems. I'm talking about the one you had to download and install back in the PPC days, not the small version that installs with the driver download from Apple.
