I've just moved over to 2014 and am having major problems just dealing with my first measure.

I'm in 3/4 time and looking to add a quarter note and 8th note on the third beat in within a tuplet bracket. I'm getting all sorts of pings and error stabs coming out of my speakers when I try to do this.

In the previous version I was able to overload the measure, i.e. put more notes than beats in it and then simply hit the bracket key to correct. Is that now no longer possible?

I'll be pretty disappointed if its not.

Thanks,

Andy

...also, the letter 'o' would hide a note or rest on a particular layer in previous versions. Has that also changed?

Maybe I should read the instructions...

Thanks,

Andy

Are you using the Simple Entry Tool, or the Speedy Entry Tool?

There is no need to switch to the Tuplet Tool, since both entry tools have a Tuplet sub-Tool that lets you enter a tuplet without leaving the entry tool.

A) In the Simple Entry Tool:
To use the Tuplet sub-Tool, first enter the note value that begins the tuplet.
Then hit Ctrl-9 *). This keyboard shortcut activates the Tuplet sub-Tool, and displays the Simple Entry Tuplet Definition.
You can define the tuplet, and you can save a Default Tuplet.
To use the saved Default Tuplet, do as described above, but without the Ctrl key (= hit the number 9 key without holding down Ctrl).

*) I could be wrong about the modifier key.
If Ctrl-9 does not work, then try Alt-9.

B) In the Speedy Entry Tool:
When you are in Speedy, you must define the tuplet before you enter the first note value.
Ctrl-1 will open the Tuplet Definition where you can define the tuplet.

In the Speedy Entry Tool there are ready made default shortcuts to the more common tuplets:
Ctrl-2 defines a 2:3 duplet
Ctrl-3 defines a 3:2 triplet
Ctrl-4 defines 4:3 quadruplet
Ctrl-5: 5:4 quintuplet
Ctrl-6: 6:4 sextuplet
Ctrl-7: 7:4

C) If you insist on “overfilling” the measure, there is a simple solution:
De-select “Check for Extra Notes”.

The letter O key only works in the Speedy Entry Tool, not in the Simple Entry Tool.

You can also hide an entry with the letter H key - works in both Speedy and Simple.

I'm using simple entry.

The method you're suggesting doesn't work. I'm pressing Ctrl-9 but all that does is select tuplet from the menu. Alt-9 brings up simple entry tuplet definition, however it doesn't solve my problem.

To be clear, on the last beat of a measure I am trying to add 8th note 1/4note within a tuplet. I create the brackets and go to add the 1/4 note but I get an error ping.

The only work around I've managed to find in the last hour - taking my example - is going back to delete the first note in the measure - go to the previously third, now second beat, add the tuplet, and then add back the note from the first beat.

Obviously, this takes twice as long.

Check for extra notes doesn't work in simple entry, which is what i use.

All of this was fine in Finale 2010.

Is there no way around this?

I am afraid that I do not understand, what you mean?!?

With “Check for Extra Notes” de-selected you should be able to end a measure with a tuplet - without getting “an error ping”.

If you go to
Simple menu > Simple Entry Options…
and de-select the option “Check for Extra Notes”, then what happens?

Please explain.
