Can somebody tell me how you've managed to, for instance, put in two groups of two triplet quarter notes?
Also if you had a bar which contains, for instance, a quarter note and a triplet eighth note, what time signature do you put in? If I've tried to put in 1.333333, which worked in earlier versions of Finale (which incidentally is a maddeningly not suitable substitute for 1 1/3/4). When I've put the notes in Finale adds a few rests--randomly, as far as I can figure out.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Rodney Lister

Welcome to the forum.
For the first problem, you can either turn off Check for Extra Notes in Simple Entry Options, or take a look at my tutorial at http://www.specialmillwork.com/finale-t ... ntry-2.pdf
I'm a little confused by the second question. Usually, you would have determined the time signature before you put in the triplets.
But...
Since a triplet of three quarter notes is equal in duration to two quarter notes, two of them would fit in a 4/4 measure.
Also, if you have a quarter note, and an eighth note triplet (equal to two eighth notes, or, one quarter note) then that would go in a 2/4 measure.
If I have misunderstood the question, try again!

In this case there are two time signatures to consider:Rodney Lister wrote:…if you had a bar which contains, for instance, a quarter note and a triplet eighth note, what time signature do you put in?…
1) The “real” time signature - to make playback and music spacing work.
2) The “display” time signature - to show in the layout.
1) As the “real” time signature, put in 1/4 + 1/16 + 1/64 + 21/4096.
2) For the “display” time signature, the simplest solution is 1/3.
You will have to hide the measure’s “real” time signature.
Use the Expression Tool to create a false time signature for the display.
See the attached Finale document.

Peter,
Sorry, but I'm completely confused. What did I miss in the question?

Mike,
There is a slight difference between “a triplet eighth note” (= Rodney Lister’s wording) and “an eighth note triplet” (= your wording).
I could be wrong here, but I think that Rodney is talking about a single eighth note from a triplet.

Then does the rest of the triplet continue over the bar? If not, and he only wants one-third of a quarter note, following a complete quarter note, then I will fall back on my standard comment in such a case: WRITE NORMAL MUSIC.
You would get the much same effect with a short quarter and a sixteenth, and musicians will immediately know how to play it.

Actually the music itself is “normal”.miker wrote:…WRITE NORMAL MUSIC…
What is not so “normal” here, is the layout - with an incomplete tuplet.
I attach the same example in a more “normal” layout.
