Re-authorizing older version of Finale?

Hi everyone,

I got back to working on a piece created in Finale 2012. I'm already using the 2014 version, but it seemed less problematic to edit the music in 2012, because after opening it in 2014, thing are messed up a bit.

After a few brief changes, I wanted to print the piece out, but the program says I can't print or save files, because my grace period for 2012 has expired and is asking me to authorize it again. I can do that, but I've already authorized my 2014 version and I'm afraid it might affect its functionality.

Any opinions on this? Any experience with this issue?

Thank you!

I believe you're allowed 2 authorizations of Finale. Try to authorize your 2012 version. If it won't take, it won't take. You can always de-authorize and re-authorize.

You have 2 authorizations for each version.

You should be allowed two authorised installations of EACH VERSION. So, 2 x 2009, 2 x 2010, 2 x 2011, 2 x 2012, 2 x 2014, (Can't remember if .5 is separate or an update), 2 x Finale 25.

Things shouldn't really be messed up between 2012 and 2014. That might be a fixable problem in itself. What exactly is the matter?

If you were able to authorize that version in the past, you should be able to again. Im my case, I had 2011 and 2014 but skipped 2012 so I cannot authorize it—2011 and 2014/2014.5 are fine.

If your hardware hasn't changed, it should work automatically. Your signature indicates a Mac. As long as the drive is in the same bay, no problen, even if it's no longer the same physical drive.

You cannot do a fresh install of Finale 2011 if you are on OS 10.12 Sierra. If it was just deleted but not uninstalled, you're ok and it will reinstall but, if a complete uninstall was done, that ship has sailed even if SIP is disabled. I don't know if 2012 behaves the same way but it wouldn't surprise me if it did.

Also, neither 2011 nor 2012 are fully functional in the last two Mac OS. They will crash if Human Playback is enabled but there are other problems. So, if it works, great but if it doesn't...

BTW, 2014 and 2015 will install separately on a drive but both count as only one license if installed on the same drive as far as the license server is concerned. If you were to install them on separate boot drives, that's two installations.

Thank you everyone for quick a insightful responses! I authorized the old version again, did what I needed and so far there were no issues with the later version (2014). Great!

Just curious – is it possible that one day the 2014 version might also ask me to re-authorize it? Anyone knows why a when exactly is this happening? This has never happened to me with any other software, even if I haven't used it for a long time.

Thanks again!

Finale stores the info somewhere. Don't ask me where. Somehow, that got deleted or moved. Those who know better can probably comment more on this. You can always ask support about it. Since 2012 is not supported, but you have 2014, you can pose the question as a 2014 question, asking how 2014 may have removed your 2012 authorization. They may give more insight as to how and where this authorization data is stored on your system.

Thank you Zuill. I think I'll ask them about it.

Finale uses a license server that allows 2 authorizations per version. 2014 will not ask for a new authorization unless it can't detect that you have a valid license. On a Mac, if you Boot from a different drive bay without deauthorizing first, this can happen. Replacing the drive is no problem as long as it's in the same bay. Even a total crash and Time Machine restore will not affect this. You're just going to have to take my word that I have a ton of experience here.

If both versions work now, you are fine. If you upgrade to 25, the other versions will still work.

Stop worrying.

Windows is different. Windows 10 automatic upgrades are hosing people's licenses causing them to contact Support to be reauthorized. MM hasn't fixed this yet though they have announced they are working to get it resolved.

Thank you for a detailed explanation, Mike! I stopped worrying :)
