Is there a way to have the barlines just between staves and not on the staves themselves? i.e. most Renaissance music. I know I can hide them and simply use Smart Shapes, but it seems that there should be a function that allows that automatically.

It is called Mensurstriche.

You can do it with a setting in the staff group's Group Attributes.
