Motet's transposition chart

Postby motet » Sat Jan 07, 2017 6:15 pm

As requested, here is the transposition chart I had posted in the old MM forum, showing the Interval and Key Alter settings for most common instruments and transpositions found in the literature, plus instructions on effecting enharmonic key changes. I may post new versions from time to time, but I think it's fairly complete at this point.

Did you leave out string instruments on purpose?

What about the viola's alto clef and the cello's tenor clef? Those might be useful to indicate; I don't know if it's completely necessary.

Violas and Cellos are not transposing instruments!

Right--the point of the chart it to fill in Finale's transposition dialog correctly. Clefs are a different subject.

OHHH, it took me a minute to get what you meant. The only reason I got it was because I played trumpet in 5th grade and the written notes were transposed a major 2nd up from the trumpet's sound.

The flauto piccolo in G was an instrument used in Mozart's time and appearing in his Entführing aus dem Serail. The notes in the Neue Mozart Ausgabe say that it sounds a twelfth above what was written, but it's confusing. In some pieces that appears to be so, but in the overture it seems impossibly high. He writes an F three ledger lines above the staff, which would translate to the highest C on a piano and would double the violins two octaves higher.

Does anyone have experience with this instrument?
