This is a bug that's existed forever that MakeMusic is either unwilling or incapable of fixing. When you type Ctrl-D (redraw), you will be shown the real position. When you click on it it jumps to a false position, as you've seen. If you want to move it from its real position, I'm afraid it's a trial and error cycle of move it (click and then use arrow keys), redraw, move it, redraw, until it's where you want it.
I totally agree with you as I haven't figured it out for quite some time. Odd, I just found one that is fine. Figures after I (finally) post. But no idea why it's fine and no idea how to fix the others (I'll copy the measure that works perhaps, and edit).

Or other possibilities about which we cannot surmise. If they could fix it at the cost of breaking every existing document's articulations, would you be OK with that?motet wrote:This is a bug that's existed forever that MakeMusic is either unwilling or incapable of fixing.
I think the problem stems from the conflict between setting an articulation with a given horizontal position and also telling it to place itself outside the staff. This is also why articulations refuse to nudge upwards for several nudges as they move from their numeric position up to the 'outside-the-staff' height, after which they start to move.
It's possible that adjusting the articulation definition might improve matters.

Make a copy of the fermata and change the settings-
√ Uncheck "Always Place Outside of Staff"
√ Change position to "Manual".
Does this one work out for you?

I played with the settings, including "place outside staff," with no improvement. Since this is a display issue, it's hard to imagine fixing it would break other files. People have been complaining about this for at least a decade.

N Grossingink's method works for me. What's confusing the articulation seems to be that it thinks there are other staff lines there.

I guess I didn't check "manual." Good to know. This seems to me to be related to the "dancing articulation" that can occur with a five-line staff (which is what I was referring to that has been around for at least a decade) but perhaps they're unrelated.

Absolutely. no question. It needs to be fixed and the sooner the better. IMHO, of course. My guess, they (MM) can't without wrecking the programming budget. Mark A. told me there was just so much money to fix things. Perhaps this is one that doesn't rate very high.BuonTempi wrote:... I do this often, especially for fermatas over barlines. It's easy to make one as an expression which always enters at the right spot without need for dragging away from a note or rest.
