Finale 2001 has MidiScan music recognition software built into it.

Scan the music as black & white line art and save it as an uncompressed TIFF file. Then in Finale, go to File Menu > MIDISCAN and open the saved file.

But, as you ecperienced, MidiScan doesn't work very well, often so much editing is required that it's quicker to input the music into Finale from scratch.

There is not yet music scanning software that works really well. You could try SmartScore, but I doubt you will find it satisfying. The technology of music scanning is still in its "childhood disease" stadium. Long ago, text scanning was just as useless.

For now, I would only try music scanning on very simple music (with no expressions a.s.o.), preferably music created in Finale with the Maestro font. And be careful to position the paper precisely in the scanner - the orientation matters!
