Tom,This will take some work. You will probably want to create 3 templates: for C Major, for F Major, and for G Major.
Here is how to create the C Major template:
1. Staff Tool. Double-click the staff. The Staff Attributes dialog box appears.
2. In the pane "Independent Elements", set the notehead font to Kidnotes.
3. In the pop up menu Notation Style, choose "Note Shapes", and click "Select". The "Note Shapes" dialog box appears.
4. In the pop up menu, choose "Quarter Notes". On Scale Degree 1 you want the quarter note notehead with a C inside it. In my copy of Kidnotes the "quarter note C" character is at #130. Click "Select", scroll to character #130, and double-click it.
5. In the upper right part of the Note Shapes dialog box, you can set the Scale Degree for your note shape. On Scale Degree 2 you want the "quarter note D" character. It is at #235.
Overview:
I. Quarter notes:
C = 130
D = 235
E = 236
F = 237
G = 233
A = 129
B = 245
II. Half notes:
C = 182
D = 142
E = 196
F = 169
G = 148
A = 140
B = 141
III. Whole notes:
C = 175
D = 184
E = 229
F = 234
G = 230
A = 247
B = 246
For the F major template you need the B flat characters:
Quarter note = 239
Half note = 198
Whole note = 232
For the G Major template you need the F sharp characters:
Quarter note = 241
Half note = 194
Whole note = 215
You probably only will use Kidnotes in very simple pieces with no temporary alterations of scale degrees. But if you e. g. in a C major piece need a single F sharp or B flat, you can change the notehead of that particular note with the Note Shape Tool in the Special Tools Tool.
