Message:
1. Staff Tool. Create a staff for the drum set. Double-click the staff. The Staff Attributes dialog box appears.

2. In the top of the dialog box you can define the staff's "Full Name" (e. g. Drum Set) and Abbr. Name (e. g. Dr).

3. Just below, in the left side of the dialog box, you can set the First Clef: Click the button "Select...". The Clef Selection dialog box appears. There are 16 clefs available, including a percussion clef. Pick a clef, and click OK to go back to the Staff Attributes dialog box.

4. Below the First Clef selection there are a list of staff options. Check the option "Ignore Key Signatures".
In the pane "Items to Display", uncheck "Key Signatures".

5. In the pane "Independent Elements", check "Notehead Font", and click the button "Select...". In the Type Style dialog box, pick Maestro Percussion (or whatever font you want for your percussion noteheads).

6. In the bottom of the Staff Attributes dialog box there is a "Notation Style" pop up menu. Pick "Percussion", and click the button "Select...". The Percussion Map Selection dialog box appears.
(If there are no percussion maps available in your document, exit the dialog boxes, and go to
File menu > Open Library...
If Finale is correctly installed, there should be a Percussion Map library among the libraries)

7. In the Percussion Map Selection dialog box, pick "Drum Set", and click the button "Edit...". The Percussion Map Designer appears.

8. In the left side of the Percussion Map Designer there is a list of all kinds of drum set instruments. Scroll through the list until you find an instrument you want in your drum set notation. Click it once to highlight it.
In the pane Notes To Use For "Drum Set", check the option "Highlighted Note".

9. Repeat step 8 for each instrument you want in your drum set notation. When you are done, hit Return 3 times to go back to the score.

10. That's it. Now you can enter your drum set notes, and get correct playback. If you have more than one notehead (instrument) on the same "scale degree" (e. g. open and closed hi hat), you can cycle through the noteheads by "sharpening" or "flattening" the note.

11. Finally go to the menu for "Window/Instrument List" and ensure that the Percussion staff is assigned to Channel 10, and that is is NOT muted for playback.
