Tom,

Finale can use colors to display different items on screen. You can change the display colors as you like.
The red color is by default used for several things, like e. g.
* entries in Layer 2
* smart shapes (e. g. crescendo and diminuendo wedges, slurs)
* measure assigned text blocks

My guess is that in this case the red color means Layer 2. Switch to Layer 2, and see if you can now edit the music. You can switch layers in several ways. One way is the pop up menu in the lower left corner of the document window.

A more general solution to problems like like is the Selection Tool (Arrow icon). When you are in the Selection Tool, you can double-click any item, and Finale will take you to the tool that created the item.
