It sounds as though the expressions were entered as measure attached, not note attached. If that is the case, your only options are to reassign them as note attached expressions in the original document before you copy or to delete each one after you copy into the new document and reapply them as note attached expressions. You can usually tell which ones are which by their color. I think the default setting is to have measure attached expressions green and note attached expressions red. Although the same tool is used for both, how they are assigned is dependent upon where you click (and which box is checked in the Expression Selection dialog box).
