Changing individual noteheads

Message:Setup: Finale 2000 on Win95.As illustrated on page 28-5 of the online documentation, I want to change individual noteheads to the "let ring" noteheads, or apply the "let ring" slurs from within the articulation tool. I've spent hours trying to follow the instructions and simply can not replicate what the documentation says to do. If I try to change the default font from Maestro to Engraver, ALL noteheads become letters. And for the Articulation tool, I can't see the way to change the font to Engraver. Is it me, or is there something missing (or hidden) in the documentation that explains how to do this? Thanks in advance.
