Bob,First off, forgive the length, but hopefully this can help someone else out there...
You are correct in assuming that the Engraver Font set is supposed to install with the rest of the Finale package. You can't find it in a search because it is zipped up inside the self-extracting installer. The names of the included fonts are as follows:
Engraver Font Extras - ENGRFE__.TTF
Engraver Font Set - ENGRFS__.TTF
Engraver Text H - ENGRTH__.TTF
Engraver Text NCS - ENGRTN__.TTF
Engraver Text T - ENGRTT__.TTF
Engraver Time - ENGRT__.TTF
I realize it sounds mundane, but have you tried un-installiung and re-installing using the "full install"? The only thing I can figure is that in a custom install, or partial, that somehow the fonts didn't get included.
As per your other question, yes, it is indeed possible (now), and yes, the online documentation is a little vague. First the "easy" one, articulations...
Click on or near a notehead to get the 'articulation selection' dialogue box up. Choose "create" and when the 'articulation designer' box pops up, select 'set font' from the right hand side. Assuming you can find your engraver font, select it (or extras), click 'OK' and then back in the designer, click on the 'Main' tab to choose your particular articulation. This will display all symbols available in whatever font you selected. If you wish, you can also set the default positioning and whether or not it has a flipped symbol, etc., but for what it sounds like you want to do, just a 'main' symbol should work for now (no need to make it more complicated than necessary!)
Before Finale 2000a, I don't believe that the *individual basis* part of your question was possible. If you wanted those font characters layed out in section 28-5 of the documentation, you would have had to change the entire staff to the Engraver font, as Dan mentioned.
Here's my solution...
Create a staff style (Define staff styles under staff menu) and call it "Independent Engraver Font" or something like that. Under "Independent Elements", make sure a check box is next to 'Notehead Font' and select Engraver (or whatever font you desire). Before exiting out (via OK), do yourself a favor and check the 'copyable' box in the upper left (2000a only), it'll help you later on, believe me!
Now to put it into application...
Go to a measure, and apply your new staff style to it*, OR just to part of it, whatever fits your needs.** NOW, with the Special Tools, and 'change notehead' you can acheive what is layed out in the online documentation.***
* if you're going to be switching back and forth a bunch between two fonts, program your staff style in as a metatool! (shift + letter or number)
** keep in mind that you can use partial measure selection (edit menu) to apply staff styles to a single beat or even a fraction of a beat.
*** As a shortcut, it's usually easier to copy and paste the new symbol (notehead) rather than go through this procedure for every notehead. (that's where the 'copyable comes in from earlier in the staff style)
Any problems or questions, contact me via e-mail or through this forum, I'll try my darndest to help!
