Message:Walter,according to Ward's reply, I'd say: if your son needs this heck of functions, go and get it (for the student's price!). Ther are other programs around for notation, e.g. check the notation section at www.hitsquad.com/smm . You might also download some trial versions first. I'd suggest to go with Allegro: it's moderatly priced and contains all basic features - and you can upgrade it to the full Finale version, if necessary. Check the link below for details. A final thought: the skills of music composition and arranging require some efforts. Writing music manually isn't always a bad thing: you learn a lot and you get some good insights into the problems and tasks of music copying. You tend to get a feeling for the look of a score and the parts better, if you write at least some of them with pencil. Greetings, Harald
