I do tons of marching percussion writing with Finale. It is a greaet program. Read up on percussion maps...They will help with playback. I use an Alesis qs8 with a ram card, so I actually have marching percussion sounds on the board. They are great. Playback sounds just like a drumline...let me know if you would like to hear one, I will send you an MP3.

How many marching bands do you write for? I also write...check out my page for some downloads.
