Evonne,Beaming across barlines is described in the online documentation. Check it out!
The method described in the online documentation goes like this:
Lets say that your time signature is 4/4 and that you want three beam groups of three 8ths. The last 8th in the third beam group should be on the first beat of the next measure.
1. In the next measure, enter an 8th note with the Speedy Entry Tool. Press LeftArrow to move the crosshair back onto the 8th note. Press clear to turn it into an 8th rest. Press O to hide the rest. This hidden rest will serve as a "placeholder" for the beamed 8th.
2. In the Speedy menu turn off "Move To Next Measure". Go back to the first measure and enter the nine 8ths. Beam them together 3 by 3 (use the / key on the numeric keypad to beam them together).
3. When you exit the measure, you will get the "There Are Too Many Notes..." dialog box. Choose "Leave The Measure Alone" and Click OK.
That should do it. When you have entered all the music and applied music spacing, you might want to adjust the position of the nineth 8th. You can adjust the position by entering a new position number in the Edit Frame dialog box. The nineth 8th is in Slot # 8, since the first 8th is in Slot # 0.
