Andrew,

Enter 3 quarter notes and whatever rhythm you need on count 4 on the middle line of the staff. Use the Note Shape Tool in the Special Tools Palette to change the notehead shape of the notes to slashes and use the Stem Length Tool to shorten the stems of the quarter notes so they disappear into the slash.

In F2k1, this is much easier and, combined with the other features, worth the cost of the upgrade IMHO.
