Daniel,

Use layers!

On the bottom left of your screen you will see 1 2 3 4. These are layers. Use speedy entry. For layer 1, write a half rest. Then add the 2 quarter notes. Put the cursor on the half rest and press the 'o' key to hide the rest. Now go to layer 2 and write your half notes.
