Re: Survey: Finale interface

I would like major changes with a major caveat (as opposed to a minor or diminished caveat): capabilities are to be added; errors fixed; general approach kept the same. Things (even those not affecting my work) that help are fine (ties between non-consecutive notes, better chord symbols), etc. Perso...

Re: Aria Player

You have to have both the Aria Player and Aria Engine to used Garritan Instruments. I don't know why your player is displayed strangely.

Re: Trumpets sound flat

I've had the volume problem myself. I use gogreen's suggestion; I put instruments into different banks. I first started doing this in order to use different reverbs. The "Controls" settings also differ between instruments.

I've never had the pitch problem though. (Maybe later.)

Re: Eighth note

There are two ways. One is to set the time signature to something that behaves as you want it to do (and display the nominal time signature). I often write with 4/4 displayed but with 8/8 as the "real" signature to get the eighth notes connected. Another method is to use the backslash key to connect...

Re: How are the VST Banks & Effects organized?

For templates, I just take file for which I like the settings; delete all (or most) of the notes; then save the file under a name I can remember. Later I can just edit that file which will even include the loaded libraries. I've got a bunch of files with nice settings but poor music; they will get o...

Re: How are the VST Banks & Effects organized?

My experience has been that when I use GPO5 or JABB3 or GWI (the main one I use), most instruments get put into a single bank (usually bank 1) sequentially into channels. Sometimes, percussion instruments will go into channel 10. I use the Score Manager to do assignments now. I let the system put st...

New Finale 26.3.1.520 Available

I'm downloading this tonight. I'll report if it affects (+ or - ) anything I do. I have typing problems that affect a few others; it occurs in Ver25 and Ver26. It did happen right after some Microsoft update so I can't really isolate it. It happens on all my files but MM and others cannot recreate i...

Re: ties

I like that one. I could even sight-read it. (I did something similar to make a harp montuno but I didn't notice that one could do it here.) To me, this is the best solution (so far).

Re: Repeat entries

I like that idea with repeat entries. What I tend to use is just copying a measure (or measures or stack or stacks), inserting or pasting into an empty slot; then edit. It's useful for montunos in a Latin style.

Re: Advice for Best Orchestra for Finale

Seems like I have a bit of work to do to get NP3 to work. I tried it on the contest piece in one of the composer forums (I don't remember which is singular and which is plural). Just doing what's on NP3's site (put NP3 at the top, reset HP to standard, defaults, reassign sounds) doesn't yield much r...

Re: Advice for Best Orchestra for Finale

I use the Garritan GPO5, JABB3, GWI, and sometimes COMB2. Together these were much less than your budget so that's a reasonable start. The Garritan VSTs are owned by Make Music so they fit in easily (the other reason I got them.) There are other collections that I'm less familiar with: the organ stu...

Re: Percussion Playback woes

Their detailed instructions were a bit complicated. I just downloaded them to a known directory (I've got one on disk C:). Then I used either the File Explorer in Windows or the DOS box XCOPY or COPY command to put them where I wanted. (File Explorer may be easier.) Then I put them in something like...

Try this link in the Make Music Support Knowledge Base: https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/217663758-Setting-up-Garritan-libraries-with-Finale-and-PrintMusic It has a bunch of XML stuff including stuff for some default percussion. Quarter note (crochet) at 180 should be no problem notation wise. Waltzes, especially Viennese Waltzes, tend to be danced from 162 to 180 or so.

Re: Playback suddenly stopped working

I've had some weird things of this type over the years (but not exactly what you described.) Sometimes it's due to some Microsoft Update which, while intended for some non-audio thing, still affects audio. It can be an interference with the audio due to timing or the like. Another possibility is som...

Re: reducing file sizes for PDFs and mp3s

I prefer to export my Finale sound output as .wav files; this is lossless. Then I use Audacity to convert the .wav to a .mp3 at any rate I wish. The latest Audacity has Lamé built in so using it separately isn't necessary. One can also convert to .flac files which are much smaller than the .wav file...

All the Garritan work with Finale. Both are owned by Make Music. As VSTs go, these cost little but work pretty well. Others cost more but have better (and more) sounds.

Things I discovered about lack of sound.

I never had problems with sound (other than the quality) with Finale and Windows. Last few weeks I had the following which I did figure out. Seeming random: "Audio Engine has failed to load" or or something similar. No sound from headphones or speakers, sometimes at the same time, sometimes one or t...

I got a new laptop last month; HP had a big sale. I decided to get something to run some my big math stuff and do some Finale music things. Based on an old recommendation (and some experience), I decided to get an HP Omen gaming laptop. Fast chip (not the fasted, the second slowest), good graphics (...

Re: playback slows down at m. 2

It seems that your "swing playback" marker (quarter=120) was only applied to the first measure. When I remove that articulation (or expression or whatever type of ion), everything plays at the slow tempo. The slow seems like the default. Somehow, you need the tempo to apply to the whole piece (or at...
