Fitting staves nicely on a page
I don't know what to call the "spaces", so I can't find it in "Help"; I'll search more after I know WHAT to search for. OK, so sat I have 10-12 staves; I extract parts; I have three trumpets. I want to print those three staves on one page; they fit easily, BUT, They end up three "sections" [systems]...

Larry, Go to Page Layout. You can drag the left margin of the system to the right, to give yourself more room. If you want to adjust it numerically, Page Layout>Edit System Margins. Aaaaaaah, thanks miker. So easy after one knows the answer, ha.... so my "unclear label" experiece shall never be rep...

Instrument Titles
See the attachment; I don't know what you "call" this, so I can't do an effective job at "searching". So by the attachment, you see on the "Conductor Score" that the Instrument names are WAAAAY toooo short. This also happens to the individual sheets after "Extracting Files". Normally, I've been livi...

It worked
You should be able to do 7/8 in Print Music 2010. I tested with PrintMusic 2011. Create a document in 4/4. Click on the time signature tool, and then double click the first measure. Click the lower LEFT arrow (Beat duration) until the 4 becomes an 8, then click the upper RIGHT arrow (number of beat...

7/8 timing; OUCH
Yes, I'm imagining that I can' t do this on PrintMusic2010, and am not complaining; I'm getting LOTS of good use out of this program. But if I CAN do 7/8, what am I missing? Secondly; I might be "off topic", but in the bands I play in, they presented a piece today that has a 7/8 section, SOOOOOO, if...

Further research; piccolo, flute, alto flute
I should have done this FIRST before my previous note. My "alto flute" in "Component File" shows patch 73 which is FLUTE, whereas patch 72, as you stated is a piccolo. So now, if I'm not getting all tongue twisted, Piccolo is a 72 Flute is a 73 and as I suggested, ha, Alto Flute is a 73...... and I ...

Alto Flute/Piccolo
Larry, That shows Patch 73, which is a piccolo. Is that the right sound for an alto flute? (Just asking.) Remember that adding a new instrument won't necessarily give you the correct playback. I don't know; I'm not an expert on flutes, but I DO KNOW that a piccolo is MUCH higher in tone than a norm...

Re: Adding non-existing instrument (eg alto flute)
I suppose that you are talking about creating a new document by using the "Document Setup Wizard"?.................................................... To add an ensemble, edit the file "ensembles.txt". The User Manual continues to puzzle me, and sometimes I just plain don't understand, I'll admit. ...

Instrument Lists
OK, I found MY list in "Component Files". not "Configureation Files"? Now it IS a long list, and somewhat complicated. It takes a little more than simply "adding an instrument" name. Curiously enough, MINE already HAS an Alto Flute, shown as follows: qqqq [INS:Alto Flute] Name = Alto Flute Abbr = A....

Re: Adding non-existing instrument (eg alto flute)
I suppose that you are talking about creating a new document by using the "Document Setup Wizard"? The wizard uses the text files in the folder "Configuration Files". You can edit these text files in any word processor. To add an instrument (e. g. alto flute), edit the file "instrument.txt". NB: th...

Yes, good question
So I await an answer to your question, too.miker wrote:But at what point did Finale stop recognizing ETF?
My point is, if there is such an overlap, and if Larry can get a program from that year, he can open his ETF files, export them as XML, and reopen them in something current.
thx,

EFT and XML info
Thank you sooooo much. This is an EXCELLENT response; I consider it an excellent "mini-lecture"; it ought to be made into a "sticky", as I imagine this same question is lurking in the back of other [beginning] users minds. But I wonder why Finale, as it "improves" over the years didn't "retain" the ...

ETF files
I've done a search on this, and the threads/posts are from previous years, and I think they all related to "saving as etf", or exporting as etf. My question relates to the opposite. I've found some interesting titles on the internet, I UNZIP them [thanks miker] and they come out to be ETF extensions...

"Labelling it trumpet"?
Just labelling a staff "Trumpet", does not make it play back as a trumpet. You need to go into the instrument list and assign the staff to the appropriate instrument. I'm not sure what you mean, or if I explained myself totally; I went into the "Setup Wizard" as I ALWAYS DO [I don't even KNOW anoth...

Not playing the INSTRUMENT that I assigned
Yes, I imported a Finale freebie in SSTTBB. The sounds that the original produced seem to be piano/keyboard. So I saved it, copied it, then added six new staves labelled Tpt, Tpt, TBone, TBone, BaritoneBC and BaritoneBC. [edit; I then copied the original six staves into my NEW six staves]. I "silenc...

I've tried several hours to get a post on the title "music not playing" approx 5 topics further down. It always says "No Post Mode" selected, or "Invalid Session"; I retyped until my fingers got sore : ) So here, for the person approx 5 topics down is my response to you, AND my similar problem with ...

Yes, I agree
If things are the same in PM as in the full Finale, I think right-clicking (while in the time signature tool) and selecting a time signature applies it to the rest of the piece. It is thus more useful in your case to go through the time signature window, which offers many more options. Yes, that is...

Inserting a Time Change Signature
When you change the time signature, in the window, you have 3 options; the first one is to apply it to a measure range, which can be limited to 1 measure. See image. Mixed Time Signatures; second question
Very similar question; that's why I left it in this same thread. OK, DIFFERENT situation, but I still start out with "setting" my "original" time signature to, say 3/4. whole song is 3/4. Now I need to add ONE MEASURE of 2/4 in the middle somewhere. I choose the measure, do the time signature icon/b...

Mixed time signatures
I set my music up with 4/4 for starters. Then I use the time signature box to change them., I have a real big mix of 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time signatures, and they change back and forth a lot thru the whole song. Now in scroll view, I want to "copy" that, and paste it at the end in another key; I have ...

It has always worked until last night. I take two notes, click the slur tool/icon, then double click the first note, nad it puts a GLISS marking there; I can't change it no matter what. Can't get a slur NO WHERE. Has my PrintMusic gotten ill? So to try "more", I single click the slur tool, go to the...
