ah-ha!
i discovered the multi measure rest issue. All the whole rests in the parts were inputted by hand. Guess i have to go hit delete on all the whole rests now

okay, making progress
but I still can't figure out which setting to select or deselect when 'defining' the staff style
all i need is for the staff name of the instrument to appear at the head of the score
and this style is preventing me from doing it and it's frustrating

yes i have a staff style in place, a 1-line staff, but how can I change it to display the staff name?

a follow up question... how can i choose where on the system the measure numbers appear? for instance, in a full orchestral score the measure numbers default to appear above the winds, the brass, the harp, the piano, the percussion, and the strings....why!! i only want the measure numbers to appear ...
