Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

the concept of "vertical justification" simply will not get through my thick skull. I've tried little numbers, large number, it's like one end fixes one problem but screws up another region, then fixing the other region screws up the first one that was fine before. Michel, here's a PDF I created th...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Here's something that I think really shows the difference between Finale and Dorico. In Dorico, if you add a fermata on a note, then it will automatically add fermatas to every staff, because Dorico knows that (typically) fermatas are marked on every staff. In Finale, you have to add each one -- yes...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Sounds good! Just a question, how do you remove the adjustments? Is there a 'reset' feature, or do you have to do it manually? Manual adjustments to Notes and Staff spacing show as red anchors. You just select them and press delete to reset. (You can't actually delete or change the music in Engrave...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Where Dorico really excels is in the unique features, like Flows and Layouts, Condensing, etc. A lot of the music I do is concertate sacred music for choir and orchestra. So several different movements, each with different scoring. ("Et in terra pax", etc). Dorico lets you put each section in a diff...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

I take it Dorico has an equivalent to Finale's Automatic Music Spacing. Can you turn it off if you want to make manual adjustments not over-ridden by the program? And, if so, is the setting document or program specific? Dorico automatically spaces all the music. If you want to make manual adjustmen...

Re: dead horse

I doubt if MM reads this board. Just to show how dead this horse is, here's a thread on the old MakeMusic forum in 2007, over 14 years ago , bemoaning: the lack of useful features in the latest version the lack of bug fixes and the newly introduced bugs inability to keep up with the competition Is ...

I knew I wasn't making this up, but since no one seemed to have noticed the problem a few posts earlier, I thought it best to drop the subject.
I've been posting about this problem (and reporting it to MM) since 2012!

Re: Graphics programmes

With regard to PDF imports in Finale being blurry and bitmapped: this from David Cusick, in an email from 2020: I have done some considerable research on this and the biggest problem that I have found with this is that Finale is taking a vector image and displaying this correctly in the program but,...

Re: dead horse

I think the first statement explains a lot of the differences vented here, as so often. There's a huge difference between making a big score with a tight deadline for a (one) performance, and to carefully prepare a score for publishing. At least it should be. The second statement makes me a bit low...

Re: dead horse

John, given that the 'tools' in the side panels are entirely dependent upon what mode each window/tab is in, having them independently floating makes no sense. You can show or hide the side panels at the touch of a key; again per-window or tab. Why do you need to modify them? (Once you've learnt the...

The difference being that when you ask for a feature to be included, you get a swift reply, and can reasonably expect it to be implemented.

Re: dead horse

Dorico has an Engraving Option for shared staff labels, if they are Solo Players, not Section Players. I presume that's deliberate, rather than an oversight. Dorico follows Gould fairly strictly: I can't find the exact rubric, but it seems to follow what she says from p. 499 onwards. Screenshot.png ...

Re: dead horse

People have been posting about the impending death of Finale since 2007, at least. I suspect it will continue until some future technical obstacle becomes too great for its ancient code to surmount. If not Apple Silicon, then perhaps the next tide. Windows is apparently due to draw legacy lines in t...

Re: a new version?

Does anyone have any "inside" information regarding a coming version 28 of Finale? If and when a version 28 shows up, I suppose I'll be glad to upgrade. By then it'll be time. If past history is anything to go by, version 28 is likely to be 2 years' away. There will be the usual point updates to 27...

But of course, there's no reason why Finale shouldn't export MP3, even if you're using VST/AUs. It's not the 90s anymore.

Re: Make notes (not rests) the default in speedy

I first started using MusicProse 2.1, a cut-down version of Finale, back in the early 90s. It belonged to the school I was working at, so obviously, no one knew where the manual was. And no internet forums or online Help pages. I could never get Speedy Entry to do anything except enter Rests, so con...

Re: Paper colour

'Text' paper tends to be yellowish off-white, with a dull finish, and has done since forever. It's a lot easier to read, text or music, than on some shiny high-gloss ultra white stock (which some printers seem to think looks good). Whether you can get hold of any, is another matter. Anything beyond ...

Re: Time to upgrade to 27?

My friend said he had things reformatted after opening pieces in 27 which he had originally done in 25. Is this something I need to worry about, or should I go ahead and make the switch? To be fair, that may have been caused by the articulation shake-up in v26. And Mike's link only refers to playba...

Re: Easy Tremelo not rendering properly on screen. Shows large letters instead

The Finale Maestro beta, over five years ago, came with Libraries and FinaleScripts to convert from SMuFL to non-SMuFL, so I have no idea why they enforced this apartheid between the formats. They could have even produced a hybrid font, like November 2 (or Sebastian!) which contains both sets of gly...

Re: Finale Developer Roundtable

BTW, Finale does like a big fast video card. Get the best one you reasonably can. Really? Im surprised at that. Compared to ray-tracing shadows and rendering translucent 3D polygons at 120fps, Finale's demands are quite light: it's putting lines and text onto a page, in a single, solid colour! :lol...

It also gives an indication that problem is nearer the printer's end than Finale's.

I presume you're using the most up-to-date drivers? Are there any relevant settings about fonts or language protocols in the print options?

The ARIA Player shows depressible pedals for any instrument, but the Garritan pianos in GIFF don't actually do anything differently when the soft pedal is depressed.
